Since the mid 1990’s, John Hartman has investigated the rhythm of the landscape in Newfoundland through his remarkable painting and printmaking. His images have been collected from travels through outport communities and from captivating promontory viewpoints around St. John’s, such as the Battery, Signal Hill and the Southside Hills. One of Canada’s most recognized painters, his major exhibitions include CITIES (2007-2010), which was exhibited at The Rooms, and Many Lives Mark This Place, which was shown at Grenfell Art Gallery. Both of these exhibitions toured across the country.
In 2020, John Hartman received the Order of Canada for his contribution to Canadian art and culture. The investiture ceremony took place at Rideau Hall on February 22, 2024.
