“In my Newfoundland Wolf series of sculptures, I pay tribute to these majestic and once plentiful creatures as they hunt, play and rest, alongside Newfoundland’s iconic stunted and windblown trees, where they once roamed free. The Newfoundland Wolf (described in 1937 as Canis lupus beothucus) appears, on the basis of tooth and skull characters, to have been a distinct “variety” of the Grey Wolf. The last reliable sightings of the Newfoundland Wolf were made during the winter of 1922-1923, although a very few animals may, perhaps, have survived into the early 1930s.” —Jim Maunder, 2022
“I come from a family of artists and naturalists and a province, Newfoundland and Labrador, which traditionally relied on natural resources for its survival. Most of my bronze or mixed media sculptures address global environmental concerns in a local context. My recent works – organic forms made from industrial materials such as steel, copper, and concrete – explore ethical and environmental dilemmas posed by bioengineering. I pay close attention to aesthetic elements such as composition, colour and surface. Using metaphor and, sometimes, humour, I create works that I hope are visually compelling and which subtly offer questions, rather than answers.” —Jim Maunder, 2006
