After art school in Toronto, Alan Stein studied at Burleighfield School in England under Patrick Reyntiens, OBE, Head of Central School of Art, London. In 1988 he established a painting studio and The Church Street Press in Parry Sound, Ontario. At The Church Street Press Alan hand prints fine art, limited edition books, illustrated with his own wood engravings. Over the years Alan has exhibited his books and paintings in public galleries in Canada. He has received many awards, including First Prize for Book Design in Canada from the Alcuin Society. Alan is an elected member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, the Society of Canadian Artists, the Ontario Society of Artists, the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, the Canadian Book Binders and Book Artists Guild. His most recent limited edition books feature collaborations with Canadian authors, including Al Purdy, Douglas LePan, P.K. Page and Michael Crummey. Alan divides his time between Georgian Bay in Ontario and Trinity Bight on the Bonavista Peninsula in Newfoundland.
