Christina Parker Gallery is pleased to present celebrated Newfoundland and Labrador based artists, Michael Flaherty, Will Gill and Kym Greeley in an exhibition titled TIME & PLACE.

The exhibition brings together three artists who work vastly different from one another but share commonality in their motivation and investigation of imagery.

Mike Flaherty exhibits ceramic sculptures inspired by artifacts found on the beach and his encounters with a caribou herd where he lived alone during a self motivated three month residency in a remote outpost, the Grey Islands, situated off the north coast of Newfoundland. Michael continues to explore abandoned places in Newfoundland while drawing a connection between past and present, human and animal, presence and absence.

Kym Greeley’s highway paintings are inspired by the Trans-Canada highway and its spawn of roadways that are possibly the icon of contemporary, post–confederation Newfoundland: the sign of our move away from coastal economies based in bays and boats. Kym Greeley states, “I use the windshield as a compositional frame and echo the flat, fixed perspective of video games. I explore a terrain that is familiar but overlooked, terrain that doesn’t fit with romantic ideals of landscape painting.”

Will Gill’s mixed media paintings on Grafix drafting film often evoke a visceral reaction. His raw compressed surfaces are abstracted but have moments of clarity when we are confronted with objects we recognize. Employing brilliantly bold colours, Gill describes narratives where he has found himself on the edge of change. He looks for importance and meaning in the chaos of contemporary experience and bares witness to the beauty of things being built and destroyed or things living and dying. Gill’s work is a constantly evolving examination and exploration of our world.

Please join us for the opening reception on Friday, December 1st from 5:30 – 8pm. The exhibition continues until December 23rd.
