Philippa Jones – Unfurling
Christina Parker Gallery is pleased to announce Unfurling, a new exhibition of works on paper by Philippa Jones. The exhibition will open April 5 and run until April 27 with an artist opening reception on Friday, April 5, from 5:30 – 8:00 pm.
To truly embrace life we must accept our mortality. We must value each fleeting moment and dwell in both possibility and the inevitable. Through this series of works, I look at animals as fragile, organic creatures. Unable to escape from the progression of time, they all succumb in moments that are unique. They are vulnerable, but their essence remains resolute. Working with watercolour and ink, the suggestion of translucence and impermanence are innate in the medium. I seek to reflect both time and light, utilizing the contrary nature of the medium, at once unpredictable and refined.
Philippa Jones has been a St. John’s-based artist since 2009. Prior to moving to Canada, Jones completed a BA in Fine Art and an MA in Interactive Art & Design at University College Falmouth (UK). Jones’ diverse art practice has included and sometimes combines printmaking, painting, pen and ink, animation, art games and interactive installations. Central to Jones’ work is the exploration of constructed realities, active myth-making, wonder and the inquisitive mind. Jones has exhibited previously at The Rooms, as well as at The National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa, ON), the Beaverbrook Art Gallery (Fredericton, NB), and Two Rivers Gallery (Prince George, BC). Jones’ work is collected by the National Gallery of Canada, The Rooms, The Government of Newfoundland & Labrador and the City of St. John’s. Jones is the Executive Director of Eastern Edge Gallery.
