The Christina Parker Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Mike Gough.

The exhibition will open May 25th and run until June 16th with an artist opening reception on May 25th from 5:30 – 8:00pm.

Mike Gough is one of the most successful and prolific painters in the province today. The Impression of Something Real will be Gough’s 6th solo exhibition with the gallery.

David Hockney’s early narrative paintings have impacted Gough’s work as well as photographer and installation artists Sophie Calle and Nan Goldin whose works about intimacy and experience have had a profound influence on Gough’s approach to art marking and the underlying themes within his work.

Gough states that when we try to recall moments of our past we rely on the mind to conjure the details. We turn inward to find nuances of the past that evoke primal feelings. We work with impressions of experience that often shift with time.

Gough’s method of unraveling personal memories is an attempt to find truth in the impressions and perceptions of the mind.  In deciphering facts and feelings his painterly descriptions of the ‘truth’ become a blend of reality and idealism.  In this new series of mixed media paintings Gough continues his process of retracing, recalling and investigating family stories of love and distance.  He explores his personal narrative in the legacies and stories passed down to him by his family.

‘I’ve searched for evidence to support these narratives and I have discovered that with the passage of time and the more often a story is told, the further it is from the truth,’ says Gough.

‘The Impression of Something Real’ presents narrative paintings that investigate love, distance and adaption to change. Images of figures coupled and alone tell the tales of human experience, of longing and of togetherness. A sense of hope emerges from the palettes and is met with symbols of solitude and resilience.

Mike Gough was born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, in 1985.  He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in 2007 and in 2009 graduated from Memorial University with a Bachelor of Education. Gough went on to attend Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, England, and graduated with a Masters of Fine Arts in 2010.

He has exhibited both nationally and internationally and his work appears in private, corporate and public collections in England and Canada including The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery, Humber College, Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, The City of St. John’s, and Global Affairs Canada among others.
