Boyd Chubbs – By Other Light You Have Found Me
Christina Parker Gallery is proud to present By Other Light You Have Found Me, a virtual exhibition of new ink drawings on paper by Boyd Chubbs. The exhibition can be viewed exclusively online and by request in the gallery.
Boyd Chubbs lives through images. As long as I’ve known him, his language has always been image-based, through his visual art, his poetry and his music. He is an artist intrigued by the immense beauty of this place we call home, and we are all the beneficiaries of his devotion to his craft. The images represented here are both bewildering and hypnotic, leaving space for our own interpretation of the journey.

Boyd Chubbs was born in L’anse Au Clair, on the southern coast of Labrador in 1955. Chubbs came to Newfoundland in 1973 and it is in St. John’s that he consciously began his explorations in poetry, drawing and the guitar, the three passions which have sustained him.
My ink drawings are visual poems, the pen and ink combine to make lyrical narratives. The definition of form and tone which results from ink delivers a weight and unapologetic statement, not held back, and laid down with knowledge that what is stated will remain… cannot be amended. The medium is without mercy; it doesn’t allow for the faint-hearted. I sign my name before I begin the drawings for I know the rules ink dictates and the challenges are always fierce and as I work I know the challenges increase in complexity and variety.
Throughout 30 years of exhibiting with the Christina Parker Gallery Boyd Chubbs has mounted seven solo exhibitions and 16 group exhibitions with the gallery. His work is found in public and private collections across Canada including the Rooms Provincial Art Gallery Permanent Collection, and the Provincial Art Bank, and the Municipal Art Collection of the City of St. John’s. He has been commissioned to do major large scale drawings that are held in the collections of the Labrador Interpretation Centre in Northwest River in Labrador and the collection of CEFI in Burlington Ontario.
