“While my work is based on post-confederation Newfoundland history, it is not so much the factual record that I am interested in as it is the ways in which memory represents this history, and the different ways these memories can, in turn, be encoded in words and images. Photographs of the remnants of resettled communities or the remains of ’50s-era industrialization efforts are contrasted with transcriptions of spoken memories related by those who lived or worked amongst them. Proust is an influence, but so is my research in the philosophies of mind, language, and art, all of which converge as they investigate the limits and potentials of our human powers of representation.” – Scott Walden, 2006
