John Haney was born in 1978. He has lived and worked in Ontario, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland. He works in formats ranging from 35 mm to 11″ x 14″ , in the documentary tradition, and is concerned, primarily, with issues and notions of place. His photographic series have been shown in two-person and group exhibitions at the Cologne Art Fair, the Rooms Provincial Art Gallery, Sir Wilfred Grenfell College Art Gallery, Saint Mary’s University Art Gallery, and the Prefix Institute of Contemporary Art. His work is included in public, corporate, and private collections in Canada, Germany, and the United States. He has received production and travel grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the New Brunswick Arts Board, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council. Related activities include residencies, workshops, documentary projects, commissions and collaborations. In April he was long-listed for the 2011 Sobey Art Award, in the Atlantic category.
Haney earned his BA at Mount Allison University in 2001, where he studied photography with, and later worked as an assistant and printer for Thaddeus Holownia. He lives in Hamilton, Ontario, with writer/editor Amanda Jernigan, and their amazing dog Ruby.
