Gough’s interest in the elusive quality of memory has been a constant concern in the imagery of his recent paintings. Rooted in memories of his upbringing on the west coast of Newfoundland, his paintings are autobiographical, but carry universal narratives.
In this current exhibition, how we get there, Gough explores how our relationship with the elements – land, sky and water – connect and define us. Working in mixed media of acrylic, pastel and graphite on panel, Gough creates familiar, meditative spaces that exhibit a personal journey but simultaneously invite the viewer to insert themselves in the narrative. In the absence of detail, where vast night skies engulf figures in search, there is an opportunity for one’s own memories to develop. An expansive solitude and sense of isolation is met with a universal feeling of what it means to belong.

About the Artist:
Mike Gough was born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, in 1985. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in 2007 and in 2009 graduated from Memorial University with a Bachelor of Education. Gough went on to attend Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, England, and graduated with a Masters of Fine Arts in 2010. Shortly after, he was invited to exhibit with Witham Gallery, London in an exhibition featuring ten emerging artists from the top graduate schools in the UK, showing the future direction of British art.
His work has been featured in public exhibitions in Canada, and the UK including, The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery, The McMichael Gallery, Kleinberg, Ontario, Grenfell Art Gallery, Memorial University campus, Corner Brook and Central St. Martins, London UK. Gough’s work is included in the public art collections of the City of St. John’s, the Rooms Provincial Art Gallery, the Provincial Art Bank Collection, the Humber College Permanent Collection, Toronto, ON, as well as distinguished corporate and collections across Canada, and the UK.
