Ned Pratt – Observation Of A Place
Christina Parker Gallery is pleased to announce, Observation Of A Place, an exhibition of selected photographs from 2018 to 2020 by Ned Pratt.
Observation of a Place will be on view in the gallery from November 14 – December 5
I constantly revisit images observing how the environment has moved, how colours have changed and how that affects my original composition. What is new for me is the realization that an image evolves. One photograph does not end the lifespan of an observation of a place.
The new works produced in 2020 revisit locations close to home that have been important in Pratt’s work over many years. The limitation of travel this year opened up the opportunity to observe these locations again and to document their changing environment.
My first approach to the May 10th image showed a beach behind, a grey day, quiet and somber. I have been waiting a while to take this image again from essentially the same place. The lost beach has given way to the North Atlantic. The composition still holds but what was once quiet and somber is now vibrant and hopeful. The title of the first photograph was May 10th, the title of the new image refers to the fact that I re took it on May 15th. I’ve titled this new work May 10th, May 15th.
In the summer of 2019 Ned Pratt was invited to complete a residency on Fogo Island through the TiltingAir program. Many of the works produced during this residency are on view in this exhibition.
Ned Pratt’s photographs are carefully composed through an exploration of land, sea and meaning in between. His ability to capture what he sees brings to light what is typically overlooked. The way he trains his lens and shutter to hold the nuance of light and the sharp edge of land or built form place him firmly at the forefront of his field. Be it a breaking wave or the crest of a snow drift, Ned Pratt distills the essential from his surroundings, creating profound compositions that translate to timeless works of art.
