Hazel May Eckert is an artist and designer based in St. John’s NL. She makes work about encountering images. Earlier works took the form of figurative collage made from archival images assembled delicately, intuitively, with surgical precision.
In new work, Eckert’s images are made on her iPhone. “Failed,” frozen, or partially-rendered iPhone images create blurry, digital mirages of people, places and moments. Images that have not fully resolved or loaded (and relate to frustration/impatience with technology) gel into beautiful, contemplative washes of colour, sometimes with traces of intentioned content. Printed works in Soft Focus — a collection of images as loosely formed thoughts — prompt pause to consider our phones as a fickle collaborator in autobiography, photography and portraiture.
